There are risks in joining Caricom
Dear Sir,
I would suggest all Bermudians read the August 25 edition of The Royal Gazette, page 15, under the headline:
Gang attack leaves 47 people dead
This attack was in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and left 47 people dead. The Progressive Labour Party government is trying hard to push through a bill in Parliament for Bermuda to become a full member of the Caribbean Community, with 14 other impoverished Caribbean countries; in case you are unaware, Haiti is at the top of that list.
I am stunned that this PLP Government wants to drag our beautiful country of Bermuda into this quagmire, and to associate with a country where the rule of law simply does not exist. I understand that you do not care at all about One Bermuda Alliance members, but what about considering what this will do to the PLP’s own members?
If you ignore the will of the people of Bermuda and push ahead with becoming a full member of Caricom, I have no doubt that:
(1) the USA Government will immediately stop Immigration clearance in Bermuda and
(2) Bermudians will be forced to have visas to enter the USA.
I would ask you to please reconsider this dreadful move to align Bermuda with a country like Haiti, which has no rule of law at the moment.
