Spirit of Bermuda safe in the US

The Spirit of Bermuda

The Island’s latest round of stormy weather left the iconic Spirit of Bermuda unscathed, the Bermuda Sloop Foundation has announced: the vessel is overseas undergoing routine repairs.

Foundation CEO Denise Riviere said the charity had fielded numerous calls from members of the public concerned about the vessel, in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gonzalo.

“Luckily, she wasn’t here. The Spirit is actually in Rockport, Maine — that’s where she was built, and where the Spirit has been for her maintenance period,” Ms Riviere said. “She doesn’t head back to Bermuda until October 26, so she should be back around November 2.”

The Spirit of Bermuda had been visiting the Canadian maritime provinces, for the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, when delegates of what was then known as British North America gathered to discuss Canadian confederation. Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island — and a conveniently short trip away from Maine.

Ms Riviere thanked the community for checking in on the Spirit in the aftermath of the storms.

“We’ve had a lot of calls and well-wishes — we appreciate everybody looking out for our national icon,” she said.
