Volunteers leave a good impression

Meals on Wheels is a Bermuda-based organisation which prepares meals and transports them to people who are unable to make or get their own food. During the half-term break, 18 Year 10 students and teacher, Ms Julie Gunther, gave up their holiday and went to help the charity. This involved cleaning and sanitising every stainless steel surface in the main kitchen, including wall tiles; cleaning all the ovens and microwaves; emptying out and then cleaning four fridges, including one large walk-in freezer; washing every window and their screens; mopping floors and unpacking boxes and restocking the pantry.

Cleaning at Meals on Wheels taught them valuable lessons that they could take back and use in and out of the classroom. They learned about the laborious work required to run and maintain a facility which caters to 180 people a day. They also learned how to handle hard tasks as a group and complete them well. It taught them about responsibility as Meals on Wheels delivers to many people daily. The students were responsible to make sure that the kitchen where the food was prepared was clean and the facility was usable. As the amount of people that receive food will be increasing as the elderly population grows, the need for community service is increasing so perhaps BHS will visit Meals on Wheels again.
