Moore strikes gold again in Barbados

Proud: Moore

Madelyn Moore struck gold again last night in Barbados.

The Bermuda swimmer won the 50m backstroke in 31.08sec at the Central American and Caribbean Championships.

Moore got out to a fast start and was ahead from the first stroke. Even some trouble with keeping her line was not enough to allow Celismar Guzman, of Puerto Rico to chase her down.

Guzman was second in 31.71, with Helena Moreno, of Costa Rica, third in 32.44.

Jesse Washington, meanwhile, set a new national 15-16 record in the final of the 50m free.

Washington’s time of 24.72 was a personal best and enough to earn him fifth place.

Moore’s gold was her second of the championships, after she set a new record in winning the 50m free in a time of 26.65.

The 15-year-old’s time was also a personal best, a target she had been aiming to achieve.

“Going into the competition I knew that the record was a few hundredths slower than my personal best and knowing what I did in the relay gave me confidence that I could do it,” Moore said.

“In the 50 free I was really looking to get a personal best, and get the gold. The record was a bonus. I am really pleased with the outcome.”

The young swimmer has already impressed with multiple gold medals in competitions including the Carifta and Island Games.

“It is a huge honour to represent my country and I am proud to produce results that put Bermuda’s name out there,” she said.

Moore also has a silver to her name, after coming second to Guzman in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1min 07.03 sec.

The young star’s eventual goal is to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Washington, meanwhile, finished fifth in the 200m freestyle final, posting a time of 1:57.78.

Also competing this week, Keagan Woolley, 12, placed ninth in the boys 11-12 100 breaststroke final in 1:25.53

In the girls 11-12 400 freestyle final, Skyler Powell placed eighth in 5:00.15, and eighth in the 100 breaststroke final in 1:21.98.
