Robinson: Team is ready to face hosts

Bermuda women’s under-20 team face Dominican Republic on Thursday with a place in the next round of the World Cup Qualifiers at stake.

Having already thumped St Kitts and Nevis 7-0 on Sunday, Naquita Robinson’s side face a host team who play St Kitts tonight.

Despite being underdogs heading into the game, the Bermuda coach believes her side can upset the odds.

“We still have a mountain to climb as Dominican are a fast playing team,” Robinson said.

Robinson’s confidence is largely based on Bermuda’s dominant win over St Kitts, with striker Aaliyah Nolan banging in four goals. And while Bermuda successfully combated the heat, they still struggled occasionally against a more physical St Kitts side.

Three times, Micah Pond, the goalkeeper, had to come to her side’s rescue, including once when she tipped a fierce strike from Leranja Wilkenson, the St Kitts captain, on to her crossbar.

“The girls played extremely well [against St Kitts] despite the heat,” Robinson said.

“We had water breaks halfway through each half for one minute, but the girls showed their intent during the warm-up and it was then I knew they were up for it.

“St Kitts played a very physical game and were at times much stronger than us, but I thought we were more technical and direct.

“Micah Pond had a phenomenal game and made three very crucial saves at important times in the match.”

Bermuda face Dominican Republic on Thursday at the Estadio Panamericano San Cristobal, with the game kicking off at 5pm, Bermuda time.

“We will have to get it right against them [Dominican] and the girls are up for the challenge,” Robinson said.
