All that glitters is not real

Right to know: Bermuda’s information commissioner, Gitanjali Gutierrez (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

Please tell me that I am still in a good frame of mind. I ask that question because this morning I read in the RG that the first information commissioner appointed by the Governor is now going to reveal the ending of the secrecy culture of parliamentary activities.

You have to excuse me, but we the people were of the mind that these so-called honourable members were of the non-secrecy, upstanding, elected officials with a high order of honour, respect, dignity and integrity who are to be serving with a love for the country and people.

Well, more fool are we for thinking that these members had that accountability and respectability for the people they represent. But here we go again with another exposure avenue that tells us that all that glitters is not real, but chicken dung in the sunshine.

People, let’s get real with ourselves and get to grips with reality. We have a group of Eskimos that everyone is selling ice to and Bermuda has got to be the laughing stock of the world.

In the case of the hotel in St George’s, I would like to make a little wager (this is against my Godly principles), but for the sake of a jest to Shawn Crockwell, I will wager $100 to a month of his salary that there will be no hotel in St George’s — not even by the year 2020. May the best man win and it is now your call, Mr Crockwell.

The headline story aroused my mind to write when just the other day, Mr Number Bomber (Bob Richards) is all secret about revealing the facts of his proposal for a new airport, so it will be a great revelation to all of us to see where and how our money is being thrown away.

On the other side of the coin, what will we do? Or will we follow standard procedure and hoop and howl for a day and quietly say carry on?

People, remember the power is in our vote, so choose this day who you will vote for in the future. I know many MPs probably do not read the Bible, so I will close with this quote from 2 Timothy 4:1-5, which reads: “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His Kingdom. 2, Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and teaching. 3, (Please pay attention to this verse) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but, according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap for themselves teachers. 4, And they will turn their ears away from the truth and be turned aside to fables. 5, But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry.”

If they read this, at least they did get a little knowledge, hopefully.

Bear in mind these words, “when your outgoing is bigger than your income, your upkeep will be your downfall”.

I do not think that I can say this enough because it is a reminder to all of us who are not cautious of our expenditures. God bless you all with love.
