Nesbeth handed Sussex trial

Sussex opportunity. Bermuda all-rounder Nesbeth

LeiLanni Nesbeth, the Bermuda cricketer, has been offered a trial at Sussex County girls’ Under-15 team in England next month.

Nesbeth, 14, who toured England with the Bermuda National Academy last month, will be assessed by the Sussex coaches on all aspects of her game, as well as how she responds to feedback and decision-making ability.

The all-rounder represented the Bermuda Under-17 girls in their World Cup qualifiers in Haiti in July and has also played for the Island in basketball and football.

She is a pupil at one of the top sports schools in England, St Bede’s in Sussex, on a full scholarship. It is the same school that Bermuda all-rounder Delray Rawlins attends.

Lloyd Fray, the BCB president, said: “This will be a wonderful opportunity for LeiLanni to test her level of cricket against some of the top girl cricketers in the region. Being nominated for such a prestigious squad is an honour in itself and we wish her all the best in the trials.”

In the past ten years, the Sussex women’s team have won the County Championship six times, in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2013. They have also reached the County Twenty20 semi-final in the last three years, winning the final in 2012.

In 2011, the Sussex age groups had a successful season, with the under-17s winning the County Championship, the under-11s winning the Arundel Festival, the under-13s were runners-up in the County Championship final and the under-15s reached the semi-final of the County Championship.

Sussex also had the most girls selected for the Junior Super 4s in 2011, which consists of the best 48 under-19 players. Sussex had 11 players selected.

In 2012, the seniors became T20 national champions, the under-17s were the London and East Region T20 champions, the under-15s placed sixth in the County Championship and the under-13s finished third. There are two Sussex players in the England set up — Georgia Elwiss and Sarah Taylor.
