Quartet compete at World Open

Making the Island proud: Bermuda’s foursome who competed at the Boccia World Open in Colombia

Bermuda’s four Boccia athletes competed in both the individual and team events at the World Open in Cali, Colombia.

Steve Wilson, Yushae DeSilva-Andrade, Omar Hayward and Jamie Brangman all represented the Island at the Open.

Wilson won his pool to progress to the round of 16, where he lost 7-3 to Marco Dispaltro of Canada, who is ranked No 2 in the world.

DeSilva-Andrade came second in her pool, meeting Hoi Ying Kwok, of Hong Kong, in the round of 16, where she lost 4-2. She finished tenth overall.

Also placing second in his pool was Hayward who missed out on advancing to the next phase. He took both his pool games to tie-breaks, winning his first 5-4 and losing his next 4-5. Hayward finished eleventh overall.

Brangman played two games in the pool round against Russia and Slovakia, losing 1-13 and 1-9 to Slovakia.

Boccia is a precision ball game, related to bowls, played by wheelchair athletes.
