A beach bar is open for business — months after it would normally close for the off-season.

The Tobacco Bay Beach Bar and Grill opened up shop because of a combination of warm weather and a high number of tourists in St George’s.

Bar manager Stefano Harford said: “There’s high demand from both locals and visitors.

“We would normally close in October — but we’ve been open since last Sunday. We’ve had visitors requesting a place and we’ve had good weather — it’s amazing outside.”

Mr Harford added that other services, like kayak and paddleboard rental firms, had also opened up due to demand.

He said: “We’re seeing since the recession is over, visitors wanting to come to Bermuda, especially when it’s not busy and they still want that vibe on the weekends.

“They want to come and relax and still have the same amenities on offer that we have in the summer, but with fewer people.

“It’s also more inexpensive and this time of the year.

“I’ve talked to some of the guests and they said they’ve always travelled in the fall and winter months and it’s nice to have a beach bar with amenities open.”

Mr Harford added that the concession’s owners, Beach Boys Ltd, were looking at ways to extend the season in Bermuda.

He said: “They’re trying to think outside the box and innovative to drive traffic and change the beach bar from a six-month vacation spot to a year-round vacation spot.

“We’re starting off one beach at a time and trying to create a concept.”

Mr Harford said that he had been told the bar’s previous owners always closed around October.

But he added: “We’re starting off small, but hopefully the word will get out and it could be the start of a beautiful thing.”

Mr Harford said the bar planned to hold a sunset bonfire tomorrow for New Year’s Eve, starting around 5.30pm.

And he added: “After that, we’re hoping to have a bonfire every weekend, depending on the weather. We want to do this every weekend at sunset.”
