Stern fines would stop people from littering

Dear Sir,

Two days ago, I was on my usual route to work and witnessed what I consider a disrespectful thing — littering.

I saw a driver of a vehicle throw a brown paper bag out of their moving vehicle with trash inside of it. The trash went everywhere.

I also have been walking through beautiful areas such as Orange Valley and the railway trail only to find that someone has dumped an entire dryer and washer on the side of the road (not to mention the mattresses, televisions and microwaves that have been there for months).

I am starting to see this pattern grow in Bermuda.

It would be a great idea to have a severe fine for littering in Bermuda, especially severe when you are dumping an entire washer and dryer on the side of the road.

It amazes me that people are able and uncaring enough to litter this beautiful island to such an extent.

If there were enforceable fines (and stern ones), I am sure we would see less of the large trash items on the side of the roads.

Littering is a serious offence in some countries, so why don’t we look into adopting some of that mentality.

I go personally to parks and trails, picking up trash on a regular basis; trash that has been thrown out by people who don’t care about the Island.

This is how I try to help keep the Island clean. Times are tough at the moment and tourism is one of the things that Bermuda will need desperately — now and in the coming years.

So, for the benefit of Bermuda residents and tourists, the Island officials should seriously consider setting up cameras in popular dumping areas.

I am convinced that this would help to deter and to reduce the dumping issues we are faced with.
