Using the gym the right way
For the most part the gym can be an enjoyable place; what can make it annoying is when people ignore basic etiquette. If you’re going to the gym or to an exercise class, make sure that you adhere to the following:
• Sweaty leftovers
With Covid we are all expected to wipe down equipment every time we use it, however we’re all human, sometimes we forget or don’t do the job properly. Make sure and wipe down the machine, handles and the floor. Bring an extra towel to soak up any excess prior to wiping down the equipment. Let’s not forget that while people may be happy to see us at the gym, they won’t be happy to sit in our sweat.
• Loud screams or moans
It’s not always possible to lift weights in silence. You may need to make some noise to power through and push past your limits. A little grunt is definitely OK, however, when your grunts sound more like an R-rated movie, then maybe they should be toned down a little. On the other hand, if you are working from home, scream to the mountain tops!
• Chatty Cathy
While working out we definitely don’t want to experience people like these once-popular dolls with the pull strings. There is nothing wrong with saying hello, however the gym is definitely not the time to catch up or give workout advice. Unless you are a personal trainer or someone has asked for your assistance, it’s probably better not to give advice unless it’s a matter of safety. Everyone’s body is different. The way you do things may not work for others.
• Singing time
While you may be totally thrilled about your new playlist for your workout and love to sing it out loud for the world to hear, the gym may not be the best place to debut that talent. Most people are trying to focus on their workout; someone singing may throw off their concentration. Save it for a Karaoke night or somewhere it is fun to sing out loud and where all listeners will enjoy.
• Parking so close
One thing I have noticed a lot in Bermuda is, even with loads of other spaces around, people tend to park in their “regular” spot. It doesn’t matter if it’s right beside someone else. Especially now with the social distancing required as a result of Covid-19, find another exercise to do until that space is available again.
• Selfie time
While I love a before, during or after workout selfie, it’s important to make sure that you do not capture others in your photos. Also, be careful not to interrupt others while you are getting that selfie. Lastly, make sure that you follow whatever guidelines the gyms may have regarding photographs.
