Brewery moves into new Riddell’s Bay home

After more than a year of renovation, Bermuda Craft Brewing is ready to open in a new location at the old Riddell’s Bay Golf Club in Warwick.

The brewery’s owners hope to open on Friday of next week, pending one last official approval.

The new facility is in the old golf cart shed behind the main building on Riddell’s Bay Road. It is approximately 4,500 square feet, more than double the size and brewing capacity of the old site on Hermitage Road, Devonshire.

“The shed had been well-maintained, but was not fit for purpose,” Mr Phillips said.

They had to take up part of the floor to install proper drainage for the brewing tanks and add new infrastructure, including a cannery. This will allow them to sell more canned brews to local grocery stores and other outlets.

“It’s faster than the old one,” Mr Madeiros said. “That required one or two people to handle it. With this one the cans come out more quickly so we needed five people to run it.”

Mr Phillips said the new location is an investment in the future.

Bermuda Craft Brewing will have 24 taps, but do more beers than that.

“I can’t count how many different brews we do,” Mr Madeiros said. “They are always evolving. There are always new ones coming out.”

To save money, management and staff did much of the work themselves.

They are determined to make the place family friendly. They have set up a playground outside.

“We want the brewery to be one of the few places you can come to during the day, have a drink and not be required to buy a meal,” Mr Madeiros said. “So often you have to be a member of a club or go to the beach to get this.”

However, food will eventually be on offer, thanks to a partnership between Bermuda Craft Brewing and catering firm Brava. They will be offering Spanish-style food such as tapas.

The brewery is part of a larger revitalisation of the old golf club which has been closed for ten years this month.

Other businesses are also expected to set up there in the coming months.

Mr Phillips said the aim is for them all to work together in some fashion.

Bermuda Craft Brewing opened in Devonshire in 2020 right before the global pandemic.

“We shipped everything in from China and it arrived in March 2020,” Mr Phillips remembered. “We put the stuff inside and then went into lockdown.”

With installers to help them set up the equipment, they had to figure it out themselves. They brewed their first batch of beer in June 2020.

This year they are hoping to have a six-year anniversary celebration in their new space.

Saturday will be their last day in Devonshire. The tap room will be open from 10am until 9pm.
