Women’s players step forward for T20

Rolling back the years: Arnold Manders

Seven women have now put their names forward to be part of the inaugural Warrington “Soup” Zuill Masters Twenty20 League which is scheduled to start next month.

Linda Mienzer is the latest to express interest, joining Antoinette Rabain, Precious Smith, Wendy Woodley, Rhoda Jones and Zina Jones whose names will go into the hat for the draft rescheduled for Saturday at 7pm at Ocean View Golf Club.

There are some 95 names submitted and all the players are invited to attend the draft. The plan is to have one female on each team.

Players from their forties to early sixties, some long retired and others still playing, will find out which of the six teams they will be assigned to.

The names represent a who’s who of cricketers going back to the 1970s and 1980s, former Bermuda and Cup Match players who desire to turn back the clock a bit to enjoy the shorter version of the game in a fun, but competitive, environment.

Arnold Manders, Charlie Marshall, Noel Gibbons, Ricky Hill, McDonald Woolridge, Wendell White, Jeff Richardson, Clevie Wade, Allen Richardson, Hoyt Zuill, Aaron Adams, Olin Jones, Grant Smith, Ricky Brangman, Allan Douglas, Mark Ray, Kyle Lightbourne, Gladwin Edness, Glenn Blakeney, Winston Simmons, Dale Fox, Francis Richardson, Dave Greenidge, Derek Wright and Roger Leverock will be among the players turning out in the 20-overs-a-side league that will involve six teams named after former legends.

A few present players have thrown their hats into the ring, too, with Southampton Rangers trio Hasan Durham, Curtis Jackson and Ryan Belboda signing up to play. Also dusting off their gear will be Ricky Hoyte, Kenny Phillip, James Celestine, Herbie Bascome, Carlton Fraser, Peter Philpott, Cal Waldron, Ritchie Foggo, Gary Brangman, Allan Brangman, Treadwell Gibbons Sr, Dennis Wainwright Jr, Philip Burgess, Jermaine Warner, Mike Levon, Freston Hurdle, Sheridan Ming and Keith Wainwright.

“Francis Richardson was the first one to show interest, Wendell White was another one,” said organiser Hoyt Zuill back in February shortly after plans for the league were first announced.

Players will play in teams named after past players Woodgate Simmons, who was the oldest former Cup Match player before he died in January at the age of 96, and Leroy “Tubby” Richardson, 94, now the oldest surviving former Cup Match player.

The other four teams in the league will be named after Lloyd James, Calvin “Bummy” Symonds, Randy Butler and the late Warrington Zuill, a Cup Match historian after whom the league is named.

The six captains have been named and assigned to the teams, with Herbie Bascome captaining Soup’s Sportsman, Charlie Marshall to captain Bummy’s Skippers

Clevie Wade (Woodgate’s Keepers), Grant Smith (Lloyd’s Drivers), Ricky Hill (Butler’s Spinners) and Kyle Lightbourne (Tubby’s Legends).

Matches played at St David’s, Bailey’s Bay and Somerset Cricket Club.
