A former Hamilton mayoral candidate and his wife are accused of owing almost $28,000 to the municipality.

The Corporation of Hamilton filed a writ against Elmore and Nicole Warren on July 9.

It is alleged that Mr and Mrs Warren are listed ratepayers in the City and have occupied 44 Court Street, but owe $27,879.60 in municipal rates for that premises.

The corporation is seeking the unpaid sums, plus further municipal rates accrued between July 9 and the date of judgment for the case, and that the defendants disclose “their real and personal assets” within Hamilton, including any funds in their bank accounts, as well as interest on the amount owed “at such a rate as the court sees fit”.

The writ also seeks a declaration that the unpaid rates constitute “a charge or lien over 44 Court Street” and the defendants’ other property in the municipality, ranking “next after any parish rates due thereon”, as well as costs and further relief that the court considers just.

When contacted by The Royal Gazette, a city spokeswoman confirmed that the matter is before the courts, but declined to comment further. Mr Warren also declined to comment.

Mr Warren, chief executive of Fresh Creations, sought the Hamilton mayorship for the first time in April, but lost to former city councillor Michael Branco, founder of ticketing firm Ptix.

While Mr Warren received more support from city residents at the polls on May 7, Dr Branco earned enough votes from business ratepayers to become mayor.
