Romaine delight at Brangman’s instant impact

Derrick Brangman spun his way into the Eastern Counties record books during last weekend’s opening round of the annual competition at Lord’s.

The Bailey’s Bay left-arm spinner broke a 14-year-old colt’s record after claiming six wickets for 40 runs on his Eastern Counties debut as Bay pulled off a stunning upset to dethrone holders St David’s. The previous colts record was held by St David’s guest player Jacobi Robinson, who claimed five for 47 on his debut against Bay in 2003.

“Records are meant to be broken and if he keeps bowling like that he could end up with the Stan Smith Award for the best spinner of the series,” Irving Romaine, the Bay coach, said. “Stan Smith also played for Bay and was a left-arm spinner just like Derrick.”

Before Saturday’s thrilling contest, which Bay won by 61 runs, Derron Trott held the record for the best bowling by a Bay colt after taking five for 53 against Cleveland in 1986.

Brangman, son of Southampton Rangers coach Ricky Brangman, became eligible to play for Bay in the competition after qualifying as a league player with the club. He was introduced as third change and was more than equal to the task.

“For a colt that was an excellent performance,” Romaine added. “His first game in Eastern Counties and he bowled extremely well. Derrick just bowled in the right areas and they continued to go at him and he got the wickets.

“Enticing the batsmen to drive with the ball going away from you is always troubling for the right-handers. The left-handers could sweep him but the right-handers were trying to drive and hit him straight and it worked out for us.”

Brangman, who copped Premier Division MVP accolades three seasons ago, is in the midst of another fine season.

“Derrick has been very consistent for us all season,” Romaine said. “He has been doing a lot in league cricket by actually open bowling because with his left arm he gets a good drift and then takes it away from the right-handers.”

Brangman, who plays Cup Match for Somerset, was the Premier Division’s top wicket-taker in 2014 with 33.
