Teen hurt in St David’s fun day brawl

Area MP Lovitta Foggo has expressed her dismay after a brawl at St David’s County Cricket Club threatened the “spirit of family and community” represented by Gilbert Lamb Day.

An 18-year-old St George’s man was injured in the disturbance that happened towards the end of the celebrations on Good Friday, which had attracted hundreds of people to the East End.

While he is not co-operating with police, according to a spokesman, St David’s County Cricket Club has emphasised that it would not tolerate antisocial behaviour and is assisting with inquiries.

“Good Friday, Gilbert Lamb Day, is about the celebration of peace and new beginnings, as is the celebration of Easter everywhere,” Ms Foggo said in a statement.

“In St David’s, we have enjoyed this for many years, without incident or altercations of any type. Just tranquil, fun-loving activity among family and friends!

“It is most upsetting that the end of our celebration in St David’s has been marked by the unfortunate and reprehensible behaviour of some of our youth.

She added: “This act is indicative of and verifies the need for our communities to collectively work, in one accord and locked hand-in-hand with Government to remedy the ills that plague our society and that seemingly play themselves out daily, throughout our island.”

Ms Foggo also noted that the St David’s community has demonstrated that “it will stand for what is just and right, when we marched against the possible closure of both the Lamb-Foggo Urgent Care Centre and the St David’s Primary School”.

“We abhor any action that threatens to stain and diminish the spirit of family and community that the Gilbert Lamb Day represents, and that prevails in our St David’s community generally.

“We must be guided by the adage that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. If we remain mindful of this and operate under that premise, I believe we can make major progress to help save us from a more turbulent way of life, and help our young, up coming Bermudians, to find a positive and more fulfilling way forward. Bermuda, we are our brother’s keeper!”

The incident happened at 8.30pm, with the victim said to have refused medical treatment. Police arrived shortly afterwards, but the individuals involved had already left the area.

A spokesman added: “An injured 18-year-old St George’s man believed to have been hurt in the incident was then located at the scene. However, apparently he refused medical treatment by attending EMTs and has so far declined to assist police.”

Responding to the incident with a statement on Saturday, the management of the club stressed that the Gilbert Lamb Day “has always and will continue to build its foundation of legacy, community and family”.

“Regardless of any rumours being generated through social media, we do not want the community at large to confuse the unfortunate incident that occurred to mar the tremendous positivity of the Gilbert Lamb Day. The management and membership will not tolerate any antisocial behaviour at the club; be assured that we are assisting the Bermuda Police Service regarding this incident.

“We will continue to strive for the safety of all patrons that come to our facility; that come to our home. As always, we look forward in welcoming you to more positive community-based events such as the upcoming Eastern Counties.”

President Cleveland Richardson added that the club was not able to identify those involved in the disturbance, noting that they were patrons and not members. He added that the club had sought to address the problem of antisocial behaviour plaguing the island’s sporting clubs “by being proactive” and hiring security. But he said the incident “unfortunately happened” as the day was wrapping up, adding that the police were called and it was “dealt with accordingly”.

In a statement released on Saturday, Senator Jeff Baron, the Minister of National Security, said he was very disappointed to learn of the incident, “particularly when I had an opportunity to attend the Gilbert Lamb Fun Day Good Friday activities earlier in the day”.

He commended the organisers and club for arranging “such a great community-focused event” and said it is regrettable that the incident occurred, “marring the goodwill and unity that the event aimed to achieve”.

“The police should be commended for their response and it is hoped that any witnesses to last evening’s altercation will assist the police with their ongoing investigation.”

Witnesses or anyone with information should telephone police on 295-0011.
