Motorcyclist failed test
A man caught riding a motorbike with his helmet on backwards admitted being more than three times over the legal limit yesterday.
Renato Andrade, 29, pleaded guilty to drink-driving in Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that police officers stopped Andrade on Richmond Road in Pembroke.
Andrade told police when questioned: “Hey, my friend, I no speak English.”
Andrade was taken to Hamilton Police Station and an officer who spoke fluent Portuguese asked him to take a breath test.
The test showed that Andrade had 228.6 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.
The incident took place on November 29.
Andrade, from Pembroke, appeared in court with the help of a friend who acted as a translator. Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined Andrade $1,500 and banned him from the road for 18 months.
