Single use plastics artwork for Earth Day
To celebrate Earth Day, & PARTNERS hosted Flotsam: a pop up exhibition of photographer Meredith Andrews’ work with single use plastics. 10% of the sales from the event were donated to KBB in support of their advocacy for Bermuda’s environment, through their mission to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for reducing waste and eliminating litter through action and education.
Andrews’ vibrant collages were made using beach waste to create intricate artworks with both images and the original “sculptures” on display.
With a crowd of 50 plus people for the evening event Andrews described to the attendees her deep passion for ocean conservation and the elimination of single use plastics. She went on to describe her fascinating process for making the collages using waste found at beaches along Bermuda’s south shore, where she does regular beach clean ups, and how each artwork takes weeks and sometimes months to complete.
Commenting on the collaboration Meredith said “Thank you to & PARTNERS for their support and opportunity to exhibit my ocean plastic art. The decision to support KBB and the tireless efforts of Anne Hyde through the proceeds was an obvious decision. It’s wonderful when two small businesses and a non-profit can come together to support one another. And thank you to all the customers who support all three of us through the sales.
Commenting on the donation to KBB, Anny Hyde, the non-profit’s Executive Director said “It was an honour to collaborate with Meredith and Andrea on the Earth Day Show which helped bring attention to the plight of our oceans and the pervasiveness of plastics in our everyday world. We are grateful for the donation, and look forward to future opportunities to raise awareness through art and design.”
Speaking to the event Andrea Sundt of & PARTNERS said “We have wanted to work with Meredith since we opened, and to be able to do so while also providing a platform for conservation of our beautiful island has been wonderful. Meredith’s work with these used plastics is engaging and is a perfect example of our interest in partnering with local makers and artists to provide a spotlight on engaging design and art.”
The exhibition was on display for the month of May and & PARTNERS’ next pop up exhibition will be of a series of paintings by Bermudian artist Rhona Emmerson. For further details on their art exhibitions dates, follow them on Facebook and Instagram @andpartnersbermuda.
