A ninth death related to Covid-19 was reported by the Government yesterday.The Ministry of Health received 45 test results with one positive — the individual who lost their life.A government spokeswoman said there were 122 confirmed cases, with 47 active.Seven people are in hospital, including two in critical care, and 66 people had recovered from the disease.The spokeswoman said that it was “timely” to remind residents of the importance of protecting people who are “extremely clinically vulnerable” because the coronavirus puts those with other health problems at particularly high risk.Kim Wilson, the health minister, said: “We must all do our part to shield them from the exponential danger that Covid-19 places them in because of their conditions.“We all have a duty to assist these persons to make sure they are not exposed.” The extremely clinically vulnerable group includes people who have had organ transplants, such as for a kidney or liver.Some cancer patients were also included, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, lung cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy and people with blood or bone-marrow cancers, as well as others whose immune systems were compromised by medical treatment.People with severe respiratory conditions and rare diseases or conditions that significantly increase the risk of infections are also classed as high risk, as are pregnant women “with significant congenital or acquired heart disease”.The government spokeswoman said that to help shield clinically vulnerable people, members of the public should stay at home when possible; maintain frequent handwashing; keep six feet of distance between themselves and others and wear cloth masks in public places.She added that people who knew someone in a vulnerable category could help with groceries, but should leave them outside their homes, assist with their pharmacy needs, and phone, e-mail or check in with them on social media.The spokeswoman said vulnerable people should stay at home, minimise all non-essential contact with others in their household, avoid face-to-face contact and “strictly avoid contact with anyone who is displaying symptoms” of Covid-19.Symptoms of the disease include high temperature and a new or continuous cough.The spokeswoman told at-risk people: “Visits from those who provide essential support to you such as healthcare, personal support with your activities of daily living should continue, however caregivers and healthcare professionals should stay away if they have any symptoms of Covid-19.“All people coming into your home should wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds on arrival to your home and often while they remain in your home.“Do not attend any gatherings, for example religious services.”She said: “Shielding measures are more extreme than physical distancing as extremely clinically vulnerable persons should really not be in public at all until phase three or four of the reopening of Bermuda.”The Ministry of Health refused to provide details on the most recent death or why the test result and the death appeared to come so close together.A spokeswoman said: “We must respect their privacy at this time.”• Anyone who is vulnerable and needs support or advice can e-mail coronavirus@gov.bm or call 444-2498• To view the government release in full, click on the PDF link under “Related Media”
