Sluggish Bermuda edge to victory

Bermuda overcame a mostly sluggish performance to record their third win in a row against American college opposition yesterday evening, with goals from Asha Trott and Kascia White securing a 2-1 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the National Sports Centre.

One good period was enough for the home side to overcome their NCAA Division III opponents from Massachusetts, with their goals coming in the second quarter.

The Engineers dominated territorially early on and had the best chance of the first quarter, but Selina Whitter put enough pressure on the WPI attacker to force a weak shot that was easily kick-saved by Bermuda goalkeeper Angela Dunston.

The home team woke up in the second period, when a drive from Jasmine Patterson led to the first short corner of the game for either side.

Not long afterwards, Keishae Robinson made a powerful run into the shooting circle and Trott pounced on the loose ball to put Bermuda 1-0 ahead.

Georgia Harris shot just wide after a great pass into the circle from Whitter and White made it 2-0 shortly afterwards when she swept home Renee Greenslade’s pass into the circle.

In the third quarter, Maya Palacio’s dribble forced a kick-save from WPI goalkeeper Emily Wilson and Palacio went on to shoot wide after getting on the end of a sideline hit from Jennifer Beech,

However, Bermuda pulled their goalkeeper as a punishment for backchat to the umpires and Bermuda duly conceded in the last two minutes of the third period.

The home side still had their chances at the end of the quarter with Tihanna Booth’s speed down the right setting up Harris, who pulled her shot wide.

White shot wide before good work from Harris and Booth forced another short corner. However, White’s shot went wide after being set up by Beech.

Bermuda again looked off their usual pace in the fourth quarter.

A great pass from Greenslade to Whitter set up a short corner, before Robinson shot wide and White had the final chance for Bermuda, which was deflected wide by Wilson in the WPI goal.

The games continue to come thick and fast for Bermuda. They face the University of Rochester, who they beat 3-0 on Friday, tonight and WPI again tomorrow. Their final game of the summer, against Division II Shippensburg University on Saturday, promises to be their toughest test. All game start at 6pm at the National Sports Centre.
