Shelley Pearson said she was pleased with her performance at a World Cup event in Poland.

The Bermuda rower finished third in the B final at the competition in Poznan at the weekend, the last major competition before the Olympic Games in August.

Pearson covered the 2,000 metres course in 7min 38.690sec, recovering from a slow start which saw her in fifth place at the halfway mark.

Ekaterina Karsten, of Bulgaria, finished first in 7:31.150, with Diana Dymchenko, of Ukraine, second in 7:36.570.

The A final was won by Brennan Kimberley, of Australia, in 7:15.980.

“I was very pleased with my performance this weekend,” Pearson said. “It was my first time racing in a single on the world scene and it was great to see where I stand.”

Pearson’s path to the B final began with her finishing fifth in her heat, and then second in her repechage race. There was progression time wise for the Bermuda rower, who was 11 seconds faster in the repechage event, covering the distance in 7:49.130, than she had been in her heat.

The driving wind and rain that battered the course during the three days of competition ruined any chance of the rowers challenging the record time of 7:07.710, set by Rumyana Neykova, of Bulgaria, at the World Championships in Spain in 2002.

Still, Pearson said that competing in such circumstances had been a great experience and helpful as she continues her preparations for the Rio Games.

“There were some tough conditions, particularly the repechage on Friday afternoon, but it was great to have experience racing successfully in such big waves,” Pearson said.

With the Bermuda Olympic squad due to be announced this evening, Pearson said she would spend the next couple of months in Brazil before the rowing events begin on August 6.

Pearson, who qualified for the Games after winning the Latin American Olympic Continental Qualification Regatta in Chile, said that not too much would change for her in terms of preparation.

Her main focus will be on “fine-tuning my technique”.
