Officers deliver youngsters Christmas cheer

A group of police officers have helped two young people enjoy a merrier Christmas, presenting them with gifts.

Sergent Sharnita Tankard said that for the second year, the officers of B Watch Central selected two deserving children to donate gifts to.

“This idea came about as a direct consequence of the prevailing economic times as we are acutely aware that some families find it difficult during the holiday season to provide the necessities. We’re ensuring that their child or children have at least one gift to open on Christmas Day,” she said.

“We identified a school in the central area and liaised with the relevant guidance counsellor to nominate two students deemed fit to be recipients of the programme. Once the students were selected, we discussed what the particular gifts would be.

“What makes this even more special is that the gifts are always completely funded from personal and selfless contributions from the members of our watch and not through solicitations from businesses.”

While last year two students at Victor Scott Primary were chosen. This year the watch selected two students enrolled at Northlands Primary — W’niy Christopher and Csaiyan Burns-Rankin.

“We are only in our second year but we anticipate that this will continue to be an annual event,” Sgt Tankard added. “In participating in this initiative we hope we can have a significant impact on the children in our community as we commit to providing effective, supportive and positive interactions that build strong relationships between the youth and the Bermuda Police Service.”
