Boat collision update: arrested man released

A local arrested in connection with a boat crash that claimed the life of a New Zealand woman last week has been released on bail.

The 26-year-old man was “released on police bail with strict conditions”, police said in an update provided today.

Police previously said that the man had been arrested on suspicion of impaired operation of a watercraft. He provided breath samples and passed the test, police said.

Mary Elizabeth McKee, 62, was killed when the Zodiac she was travelling in was involved in a crash in Hamilton Harbour on Thursday night.

A preliminary autopsy had been conducted, police said, and detectives are currently awaiting the results of a forensic review.

Her husband, 69-year-old Arthur McKee, and a 26-year-old British man were also aboard the 9ft boat at the time. Both were transported to hospital with what police previously described as serious injuries.

In the update provided this evening, police said that both men remained in hospital in stable condition.

“It is anticipated that the UK man, currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, will be airlifted overseas for further medical treatment,” police said.

Mr McKee was expected to be discharged later today.

Police said they had spoken with several witnesses and collected CCTV footage in connection with their investigation.

Investigators renewed their call for anyone who had not come forward — particularly those with video footage of the scene immediately following the crash — to contact police on 247-1744 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477.
