Dozens of people used pedal power to generate a $1,000 donation for a charity set up to help people affected by substance abuse.Michaele Parfitt-Smith, a fitness instructor who beat addiction, organised seven back-to-back spin classes in aid of anti-drugs group Focus.Money raised through the workouts meant that the donation was twice the amount handed over after a similar event last year. The 38-year-old said: “My hope is that we talk about addiction and recovery more than in just one month a year.”“Next year, I hope to get a corporate sponsor to match the funds I raise. The classes, which feature stationary bikes, were held at Streaker’s Spin Studio in Hamilton as part of National Recovery Month in September.Ms Parfitt-Smith said: “I am super pleased by the overwhelming support we always get from our clients for every fundraising event we hold.“I was happy to have big support from my family this year, who came and spun with me, as well as my Bermuda Carnival team, who came out to support me as well.”She thanked John Barritt & Son, which supplied drinks, as well as relatives who prepared refreshments.
