Bus service resumed yesterday, but only a handful of passengers took advantage.Passengers were outnumbered by security staff at the Hamilton Bus terminal shortly before noon, with several buses leaving the area with only the driver on board.Jorge Madeiros said he had been worried about the potential lack of space on the buses, but found himself as one of the only passengers on his way into the city.Mr Madeiros said: “I heard that a bunch of the seats were going to be closed off, but I guess the demand isn’t there yet.“People aren’t back to work yet, kids are out of school and I guess most people have found other ways to get around.”He said more people may take use the service today as more people return to work, as part of the second phase of the island’s reopening. The terminal was only slightly busier shortly after 5pm with about five passengers waiting in line outside the terminal. One woman, who asked not to be named, said she had taken the bus into town to visit the pharmacy. She added: “I’m a little surprised the buses are even running today. It’s a help if you don’t have a car, but it’s so quiet I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble.”Barriers and signs were in place at both the Church Street and Victoria Street sides of the Hamilton terminal to ensure physical-distancing.And buses were marked with paper signs to limit where passengers could sit. While the Government had said on Monday seating would be limited to about 17 passengers, some buses carried signs that warned maximum passenger capacity was as low as seven.
