Aspen Re has appointed Hugo Cardona as managing director for Latin America and Caribbean.

He will join Aspen next Monday. He was formerly with Odyssey Reinsurance Company, where he chief underwriting officer and senior vice-president, Latin America, Brazil & Caribbean.

He succeeds Peter Emblin who will continue at Aspen Re in his roles as managing director of Middle East and Africa and head of casualty reinsurance.

Stephen Postlewhite, Aspen Re’s chief executive officer, said: “We are delighted to have appointed an individual of Hugo’s experience and standing to lead our business in Latin America and the Caribbean. His knowledge and experience across the region will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our presence there.

“Peter Emblin has done an outstanding job establishing and growing our business in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Middle East and Africa is a key strategic priority for us and Peter will focus on this area of our business moving forward as we expand our presence there, through our newly established Dubai office.”

Mr Cardona has nearly 30 years’ experience in the industry. Prior to joining Odyssey, he was chief operating officer for Island Heritage Insurance Group, based in the Cayman Islands. He also held senior roles at Aon Benfield, Partner Reinsurance Company, Reliance National Insurance Company, and Ace Group.
