Butterfield boosts qualifying hopes

Pro experience: Butterfield will join up with the Bermuda Under-20s

Kacy Milan Butterfield, the Walsall midfielder, is expected to be among a new-look Bermuda squad that will compete in the final round of the Caribbean Under-20 Championship qualifiers in Curacao this week.

Kyle Lightbourne, the team’s coach, has been forced to make a raft of changes because of the unavailability of players through school commitments and injury. The Bermuda Football Association have yet announce the squad that heads for Curacao tomorrow.

However, Lightbourne, confirmed that Butterfield, who signed a one-year deal with Sky Bet League One side Walsall in June, is a part of his plans.

“Milan Butterfield is available for the tour,” said Lightbourne, a former Walsall striker.

“We could have used him in Haiti [in the previous round], but we are going to be able to draw on his experience this time around.

“Milan will bring a little experience that he’s received over the last few months of being over in England. He will definitely bring that to us and he’s one of the better players at his age group. We’ll be looking for him to be a leader for sure. He’s one who we will look for in times of difficulties on the pitch. From his short experience in England he would have probably come up against better players than he’s going to be playing against in Curacao.”

Among those ruled out through school commitments are Liam Evans, Detre Bell and Jahnazae Swan while Aaron Burgess is out because of injury.

“This gives someone else an opportunity and I got to know some of the players that will be selected this time from training with us before in the summer,” Lightbourne added.

Bermuda’s preparations have not been the best because of a large number of players being overseas.

“Ninety per cent of the squad is overseas and so it’s difficult for us to have any training sessions,” Lightbourne said. “It would have been ideal to have a week before the tournament, but that’s what happens at international level.”

Bermuda will compete against St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda and Curacao.

“Our objective is to try and get to the next round and I think we are capable of achieving that objective,” Lightbourne said.

Bermuda face St Kitts in their opening fixture on Friday.

Lightbourne had the opportunity to size up Bermuda’s first opponents when the senior team faced St Kitts Under-20s in a friendly this summer.

“We went to St Kitts a couple of months ago and fortunately for us I was on that tour,” Lightbourne said. “From my standpoint I know what to expect while from their standpoint they may not know what to expect from us.

“On paper St Kitts are the favourites to go through. They are a very good team but a team that we should be able to compete with.”
