Black History Month: A time to remember, a time to celebrate

Showing respect: Chaella Bradshaw-Douglas

What Black History Month means to me

Black History Month is a time of remembrance and celebration.

As a whole, our world focuses on healing from all of the pain that resulted from slavery, discrimination and racism towards black people.

With the many rights that blacks are entitled to today, it is easy to forget all of the pain, sweat, hurt and sacrifice that freedom fighters, leaders and activist went through so that all people can have equal rights.

Currently, racism still exists, however there is a vast improvement to what it was just years ago.

Furthermore, laws have been put into place so that the colour of a person’s skin does not automatically make them underprivileged. For these reasons, I believe that Black History Month is very important to the blacks worldwide.

It is important for us to honour and show respect for those who fought for blacks, for us to know where we came from and for us to understand the struggles that we have gone through. In 1963, Martin Luther King proclaimed his dream and through the actions of many, it is now becoming a reality.
