Euro champs take your pick
A variety of Europeans live on the 21-square miles of Bermuda, including the Portuguese, English, Irish, Italians and Spanish just to name a few who add to the Island’s diverse culture. And with the European football championships beginning today, you can bet many of them will be demonstrating their support for their country. It’s already started with national flags fluttering from car windows and on the backs of bikes. But there’ll also be many Bermudians glued to the TV as they follow what is considered the biggest football event outside the World Cup.The Royal Gazette asked some of those in the football community for their thoughts on which team will come out on top.Cal BlankandalSpain, Germany, Holland and Portugal are in the top five of the latest FIFA rankings and I believe that one of the four will win. With Germany, Holland and Portugal all in Group B, one of the three will be heading home early.Spain could reach the final again but I am not sure if they have the same hunger as they had four or even two years’ ago. Also, the pressure is on them as they can no longer just play good football, they have to win.To be honest, it is too early to predict a winner as this is probably the most evenly balanced tournament since Mexico 1986. As always, I will be supporting my Dutch boys and will be looking for them to reach the finals.Jon BeardEveryone seems to be predicting Spain to win; however my bet would be Germany. They were strong in South Africa and have a great blend of young and very experienced players. The defence has been a little shaky in recent games, but they always seem to sort it out for the major tournaments.Another strong possibility is Russia but the tournament format won’t allow a Russia/Germany final - so (just to be different) Germany versus France would be a worthy consideration of a final.Khano SmithI am going to say the Dutch.Spain are the favourites but based on the fact it is so difficult to win a major tournament twice, I don’t think they will do it.Germany will be strong and you can’t count out Portugal, although they are in a tough group with the Germans and Dutch. I feel the winner could come from this group.France have a strong team also, but since I have to pick one I am going go with the Dutch, the World Cup finalists. It could be their turn.Keishen BeanIt’s tough to pick a winner. I am a Dutch supporter but they are bridesmaids and I have accepted that.I think Spain will win it because of their ability to possess the ball and frustrate any opponent.Germany will do very well but Spain are going through a golden era and with Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta in the midfield they are too dynamic.I also think Busquets will show that he is one of the best midfielders in the world. He does so much unnoticed work for Barcelona and Spain. His passing is at 95% success rate and he is the best “anchor” in the world.Clay SmithI am a massive England fan but I can’t see them pulling it off or getting anywhere near the final. The way things look, we could see a repeat of the World Cup final with Spain and Holland clashing again for the Euro trophy.Holland seem to be peaking at the right time and with Robin Van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar they have the most lethal attack around.Spain, on the other hand, have star quality all over the field and are favourites, but the loss of David Villa could have a major impact on who walks away with the trophy this time around. However, there are two teams, though, that you cannot count out and they are Germany and Italy. These teams find ways to win games and tournaments. While everyone will be focused on Holland and Spain, they will wiggle their way into the semi-finals.My pick are Germany.John Barry NusumMy team to win it all is the Netherlands. I love the way that they have been playing for the last couple of years and they were unlucky to have lost in the World Cup final so I know they will be hungry this time around. The attack that they have may be the best in the Euros with one of the hottest strikers in Robin Van Persie leading the way. With Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Ibrahim Afellay it is all out attack so I feel we’ll see a lot of goals.Hopefully the defence can stand up to the test. If I had a dark horse choice, though, I would have to say Sweden. They have a real chance to get through the group stage with England having their issues.Dennis BrownI believe that Spain will repeat as champions because they have too much class in midfield going forward. When you look at players like Andres Iniesta, Xavi, David Silva, Juan Mata, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Alonso, Pedro Rodriguez, who can match that quality?I haven’t even mentioned Fernando Torres who I think is going to have a good tournament. If kept apart, I believe that the Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain will make up the semi-final with a Spain and Netherlands making up the final.England would have been a dark horse but they have too many key injuries in key positions, so Spain to repeat.
