Thompson a bolt from the blue for Chelsea

Making an impact: Thompson has three goals and eight assists in seven games for Chelsea Ladies reserve team

Teenage Bermudian Kenni Thompson has hit the ground running at new club Chelsea Ladies.

The 16-year-old forward has scored three goals and has eight assists in seven appearances so far for Chelsea Ladies’ reserve team and has made a seamless transition since joining the west London club from Spanish side Sant Gabriel last year.

“Being able to play at a big club like Chelsea is what every footballer dreams of doing,” Thompson said. “Knowing that world class players are training on pitches near you is a great feeling.

“Also being given the opportunity to train with the ladies first team is huge for me.

“Those girls are some of the best in the country and people I would consider to be some of my idols, so training with them is a dream come true.

“I’ve definitely improved physically as the English game is more demanding in that area. Chelsea have helped to provide me with training facilities and guidelines to do so.”

The daughter of Kenny Thompson, the BAA director of football and former Bermuda coach, made her debut against Bristol City Women, opened her scoring account against Arsenal Ladies and has not looked back.

“Scoring in important matches and against a top team is always a great feeling and it was even more special being my first goal for the club,” said Thompson, who also had stints in Spain with Barcelona and Cornella.

“It wasn’t the easiest goal to score. I saw the position I was in and where the ball was going and I immediately knew what I wanted to do. It was just a matter of technique and executing it, which I was able to do in the end.”

Thompson spent the past four years nurturing her skills in Barcelona, where she helped the Catalan Under-16 girls team to the Spanish Championship title last year with a 2-0 win over Madrid in the final and in 2014 was invited to participate in regional trials for selection to Spain’s national under-16 girls’ team.
