Smith leads locals in Puerto Rico

Smith is a multiple national champion

A group of Bermuda triathletes have headed to Puerto Rico to take part in Ironman 70.3 Puerto Rico this weekend.

Leading the way in Puerto Rico will be Karen Smith, a multiple times Bermuda National Triathlon champion and Commonwealth Games participator (2002).

Smith, 48, has reached the pinnacle of age-group racing having previously won her age group at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. Smith has not raced a longer distance race since 2014 due to injury that has limited her training, however she is expected to be close to the top of her age group.

Also making the trip will be a mixture of first-timers and more experienced longer distance triathletes in Tom Hands, Nancy Stevens, Danielle Morin, Josh Ball, Gerhard Boostra, Shaun O’Connell and the team of Victor Ruberry (swim), Ian Pilgrim (bike) and Lara Rogers (run).
