Runners pay tribute to veteran Cann

Bermuda's elder statesman of road running, Ludwig Cann, was honoured yesterday when more than 120 competitors turned out for a new event in his name.

Runners, walkers and children took part in the inaugural Ludwig Cann 5K, organised by Swans' Running Club and sponsored by Cumberbatch Quarry.

And while Cann himself, a regular in all of the Island's road races, was at the Astwood Park start line, on this occasion he wasn't among the field as he continues to recover from a recently-suffered stroke, having been discharged from King Edward Hospital only on Saturday.

However, he did present the prizes, handing over the trophy to overall winner Jay Donawa who finished the course in 15 minutes 39.48 seconds.

Mark Morrison placed second and Swan's club president Otis Robinson third.

Among the ladies, Rosa Peichoto was first across the line in 19:48.91 followed by Laura Keyes and Catherine Harley.
