Brian Cyril Clarke, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to stealing a laptop computer valued at $5,600 from Arthur Andersen on March 6, a cellular telephone worth $350 from Todd Martin, and a cassette radio valued at $350 from Fourways Inn, on March 12.

Clarke told Police he stole the items and sold them because he needed the money. None of the items have been recovered.

After reading probation and psychiatric reports and noting Clarke's previous convictions, Magistrate Arthur Hodgson yesterday said: "Everything was pushing in one direction''.

And a Probation officer added: "It's unfortunate, but he's burnt his bridges.'' Mr. Hodgson ordered Clarke to serve nine months to three years of corrective training.

TEENAGER RODE WHILE DISQUALIFIED CTS Teenager rode while disqualified A 17-year-old school student was fined $250 for driving while disqualified, despite being placed under "house arrest'' by his own father.

Police spotted Joel Cassidy, who goes to Mount Saint Agnes, "idling'' his bike across St. John's Road, Pembroke, on April 19.

He had been banned for 18 months in May 1997 after being caught speeding at 75 k.p.h.

And Cassidy's own father spoke in Magistrates Court to defend his son this week.

He said: "The bike has been demolished and he's been put under strict house arrest by myself since the incident.

"It just happened a Police officer was in the vicinity when he crossed the road.'' Cassidy, of Woodlands Road, explained he was taking the Daelim bike to his cousin's to be fixed when he was spotted with no valid licence plate.

Dishing out the fine, Senior Magistrate Will Francis added: "You're off the road anyway so I'll give you a six month ban from now and you can come back onto the roads at the same time as you would have.'' MAN FAILED TO HEED COURT WARNING CTS Man failed to heed court warning A man who started a midnight shouting match outside his own house was jailed this week -- one day after being bound over for breaching the peace.

Colin Scott Brown will spend the next 30 days in prison after being arrested outside his Woodbourne Avenue home in Hamilton at 12.15 Tuesday morning.

Magistrates' Court heard that 44-year-old Brown, outside the back door of his house, was drunk and shouting at his wife inside.

And Brown had been bound over for 12 months in the sum of $500 for a similar offence just 24 hours earlier.

Sgt. Phil Taylor, prosecuting, said: "He shouted: `Leave me alone. I've been to court already. I'm going to get into my house one way or another'.'' Sgt. Taylor pushed for a prison term and added that Brown, a self-employed accountant, had "done his best to empty the bars of Hamilton''.

He said: "His eyes were glazed, his speech was slurred. He was unsteady on his feet. Officers formed the opinion that he was drunk.'' The Police prosecutor said there was also a risk Brown could attack his wife.

Brown said: "There's no physical abuse against my wife. If there was, she could make a complaint.

"We are talking about shouting extremely loudly, not hitting anybody over the head. There's a whole lot of difference.'' Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered Brown to pay $500 for not sticking to the binding-over order.

He said: "I'm further binding you over in the sum of $800 for another 12 months.

"Having regard to the facts and antecedence, including a similar offence only yesterday, your sentence is 30 days in prison.

"Your neighbours must be as fed up with you as the Police, if not more so.'' `CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR' IN COURT CTS MIL `Conscientious objector' in court A 20-year-old private in the Bermuda Regiment this week explained in court why he had not shown up for duty, claiming: "I am a conscientious objector.'' Michael Anthony Clemens failed to attend for report for duty several times between November 1997 and April 15 this year, Magistrates' Court was told.

But Will Francis delayed sentencing until June 3, so a social inquiry report can be prepared.

Clemens had told him: "I'm a conscientious objector. Even before I was in the Regiment, I thought it wasn't right to be taking people away from their lives against their own will.'' Mr. Francis said he should have taken his case to an exemption tribunal instead of staying away and being hauled into court.

TOW AMERICANS FINED FOR DRUGS CTS Two Americans fined for drugs Two Americans caught smuggling drugs through Bermuda International Airport were handed fines in Magistrates Court this week.

Joshua John Pengent, 23, from Massachussets, was fined $500 after Customs officers found 0.458 grams of cannabis in a zip-lock bag inside a sock in his luggage.

He was arrested after coming off a flight on Saturday.

And 35-year-old Maria Nino-Assad, from New York City, was fined $300 after search teams found 0.26 grams of 74 percent pure cocaine when she came off an American Airlines flight on Sunday.

The court heard officers found three pieces of "white, rock-like substance'' in her toiletries bag.

Duty counsel Kim Wilson said both defendants were "extremely remorseful, both to the courts and to Bermuda''.

DRINK-DRIVER TOLD HE IS A `MENACE' CTS DGS Drink-driver told he is a `menace' A Magistrate slapped $2,150 worth of fines on a drink-driver -- then banned him from the road for three years.

Basil Gibbons, of St. David's Road, St. George's, fell off his bike on Palmetto Road -- then fell asleep on the kerb until he was woken by Police.

The 34-year-old painter, arrested just after 7 a.m. on April 18, could not tell officers when he came off his moped.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis fined him $150 for no driver's licence, $400 for an unlicensed bike, $500 for having no insurance, $600 for impaired driving and $500 for a separate 70 k.p.h. speeding offence.

Gibbons, last barred from driving in May 1996, was banned for three years, with another two-year ban for speeding to run concurrently.

Mr. Francis said: "You were a real menace, weren't you? A hazard out there on the roads.''
