A team composed of three teenage debaters will be looking to show off and sharpen their skills at an international event in Argentina this week.

Debaters Kal-shae Matthews and Haile Teart, both 16, and 14-year-old Robert Thomas are joined by coach Glenn Simmons and team manager and adjudicator Gladstone Thompson.

Both Kal-shae and Robert attend The Berkely Institute, while Haile is a student at the Bermuda Institute in Southampton.

The team left Monday for the weeklong Pan American Debate Championship in Buenos Aeries. The events for English-speaking participants begin on February 15.

The event will include six rounds of debate — three on topics participants were provided with last month — as well as three on unprepared topics.

The competition was held in Bermuda in 2013.

“I’m excited,” Kal-shae said on Sunday ahead of the team’s departure.

“It would be great to win, but for me it’s more about the experience.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing Argentina,” Haile said.

“What I’m most looking forward to is just getting a break from all the stress in Bermuda,” Robert said.

Mr Gladstone Thompson said the team had been working together for the past three years.

“If there’s anything that I’ve learned, it’s not to make a prediction going into a debate competition, because there are too many variables,” he said.

“I’ve told my children that winning is not even my objective — I just want them to get a standard. And if they do that I will be satisfied.”

The event runs until February 20.
