Book addresses faith in the workplace

Strengthened faith: Lorene Phillips

From as far back as Lorene Phillips can remember, God has always guided her career.

When she made the decision to move away from underwriting into claims management, He was there.

The same was true when she decided to leave an established company to be a part of a start-up and when she and her family moved to the UK for a job opportunity there.

God was also there as she wrote and published a book, 29 Keys to Unlocking Your Faith at Work & Win. It addresses how believers can overcome challenges such as work-life balance, attitude, integrity and networking in a God-honouring way.

The mother-of-three said she was inspired to write it out of an “overwhelming desire to correct the mindset that the spiritual does not mix with the everyday world of the workplace”.

“I wanted to be a part of the movement to help more people be bold in bringing the Kingdom of God into the world and showing Christ through our talents and skills in our everyday work life to which God has called each of us,” she said.

Her hope is that readers discover how their faith can be evidenced in practical ways: how they approach their job, relate to co-workers and carry out everyday duties. More importantly, she wants people to learn how they can become more effective for Christ — no matter what their career path.

“What happens on Monday, ie our work life, is vitally important to God — not just Sunday,” she said. “I want to be a part of the movement to equip and empower believers to be more productive in the workplace by removing the wall between Sunday and Monday. I want them to embrace this mindset and become confident that God is with them as they navigate their marketplace.”

Mrs Phillips grew up in a Christian household, but it wasn’t until her mid-20s that she started to seek God’s direction on big life decisions.

“As I have matured in my personal growth in the Lord so has my faith and, unlike in the early years of my walk with the Lord, I have learnt to rely completely on Him,” she said.

“Even when my head says otherwise I know that the peace that comes with making any of these decisions in obedience to God has been my affirmation that that’s the way to go. Through all these decisions came transitions and complete trust and faith in God that He will work everything out for our good. He has never failed.”

The change came once she realised her work life was not “off limits” to the Lord, but rather part of the bigger plan for her life. It was then she started looking at her career as another way to honour Him.

Writing the book strengthened her faith. She began guarding her personal devotion time more closely and fully accepted her identity in Christ.

The biggest challenge was juggling work and family obligations with her writing; the reward has been seeing how her “keys” impacted others’ lives.

“After one of my presentations one professional said to me with tears in her eyes, ‘Where were you years ago when I needed to hear this?’ I simply said to her: ‘I am here now’.”

Mrs Phillips will sign books today at Brown & Co from noon until 2.30pm.
