Christopher Harris won the Crime Stoppers 5K road race after breaking away from Spencer Butterfield in the final quarter of a mile, while Deon Breary took the women’s title as she finished tenth overall.

Harris, 47, has been in sparkling form in this year’s BNAA cross-country series and showed he is just as swift on the road.

Timing his final kick to perfection, he broke away from Butterfield on Pitts Bay Road before surging up Queen Street to the finish outside Argus’s headquarters on Wesley Street in 17min 21sec. Harris’s previous best finish in the event was fourth in 2011.

Butterfield, 35, was next in 17:28, followed by Robert Edwards, 16, in 18:33.

Top woman Breary, 46, showed good pace judgment as she started steadily and gradually moved through the field, overtaking runner-up Gayle Lindsay, 28, in the first mile and maintaining her lead to win in 19:58. Breary’s previous best position in the race was as second woman in 2011.

Runner-up Lindsay clocked 20:21, with Laura Wright, 33, next in 20:39.

First in the senior master division was Kent Richardson, 57, in 21:03, with Victoria Fiddick, 50, securing the women’s senior master prize in 21:12.

The over-60 division winners were Frederick Steede, 62, in 22:28, and Mayberline Black, 62, in 28:43.

A special award was given to Reggie Young who, at 83, was the oldest in the race. There were 154 finishers in the adult event.

In the junior 1.5 mile race, Quinzy Kuzyk, 14, was first in 8:19, which was four seconds inside the boys’ 12-15 division record, which he set last year.

Next was Jake Bislane, 11, in 9:38, who won the 7-11 category, followed by first girl Jessie Marshall, 14, in 9:58, winning the girls’ 12-15 division.

Paris-Mitchell Robinson, 10, was the third boy to finish, in 10:11, while Jade Johnston, 12, was second girl in 10:53, and Doireann O’Shaughnessy, 12, was third in 10:57.

In the girls’ 7-11 category, Katherine Bean-Rosairo, 10, was first in 11:07.

The 5K walk was won by reigning champion Mike Watson. The former Bermuda international track athlete crossed the finish in 31:19. First woman, and second overall, was Gilda Cann in 37:45.
