Drunk driver banned from road

A Southampton man who injured himself while drink- driving has been disqualified for a year.

Carlton Smith, 26, admitted driving along South Road in Warwick on May 8 while impaired by alcohol.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Smith was heading east along the road at 3.41pm when he attempted to overtake the car in front at a junction.

However, his black Yamaha cycle hit the side of the car, causing damage to both vehicles.

When police arrived, they found the defendant’s injury was not life-threatening.

They also noted that Smith’s breath smelled of alcohol and that he was restless and unsteady on his feet.

He admitted that he had been drinking and was placed under arrest, at which point he said: “Yes, officer. I know that you have a job to do.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Smith $800 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 12 months.

In a separate matter, Smith was found to have been driving without a valid licence on March 20.

He was fined a further $150 for the offence and had seven points added to his licence.
