BAA hosts Beer Mile

Drink up: 'athletes' compete at last year's Beer Mile at BAA(Photo by Akil Simmons)

Trying to get in shape for the summer, but want to keep drinking that beer? This Saturday at the Bermuda Athletics Association field (BAA) you can do both, at the 2nd Annual Beer Mile hosted by Bermuda Timing.

Organiser Ian Morrison, said: “The whole point of the Beer Mile is to just have a different kind of event, but the main goal is for people to have fun and enjoy themselves.

“We put this together to take away a bit of the seriousness of the regular running event and bring some night life into it.

“Hopefully we are able to get a good number of participants and people to come out.”

Each participant must complete a one mile run around BAA, drinking one 12oz beer every quarter mile.

The entry fee for individual participants is $30 and $80 for a team entry which both includes four beers and a T-shirt for each runner.

Participants must be 18 years old or older, and must provide a valid ID to be eligible to race.

The event, which is sponsored by Beck’s Beer, starts at 6pm, with number pick-up between 12pm and 2pm at the BAA clubhouse.

“The main change we have made this year is that instead of having one open group, we separated it into age groups and a team category,” added, Mr Morrison.

“We made a relay category in hopes to get even more people involved. Team events have seemed to have taken off in Bermuda and have become really popular and all we want is for people to come on out and have a good time with their mates.”

Prizes will be offered to the winners of each of the categories.

The BAA bar will be open until 2am, food will be for sale at the field canteen and there will be a DJ playing music all night.

Mr Morrison noted that “in the same vein Sportseller has a Thirsty Thursday 5K run on the third Thursday of every month which begins and ends at a different bar. It’s another good way to bring a little social fun to running.”
