Goater to play in PFA star-studded exhibition match
Shaun Goater will join a host of footballing luminaries in an England XI v World XI match to celebrate the Professional Football Association's (PFA) Centenary Year at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Goater, who plundered 105 goals in 197 appearances for Manchester City, will be looking to roll back the years when he turns out for the World XI, managed by World Cup winner and German legend Jurgen Klinsmann and captained by ex-Chelsea ace Gianfranco Zola.
The England XI will be coached by former national team boss Terry Venables and skippered by Newcastle United hot-shot Alan Shearer with Dutch legend Ruud Gullitt and ex-Manchester United star Roy Keane rumoured to be dusting off the cobwebs for the December 2 extravaganza.
Despite playing a raft of games for the Bermuda Hogges this season Goater, now 37, has even vowed to shed a few more pounds ahead of the big day.
"At least I've got a few months to get myself fit for the game and I'll definitely keep myself tuned in as I don't want to look out of shape," said Goater who is president of the Island's first pro-outfit.
"When I was contacted by the PFA I'd no hesitation as it's a great privilege to be invited to play this game. As soon as they mentioned some of the names that might be involved like Ruud Gullitt that was it for me — I should certainly get some decent service.
"The players who will be involved were all greats in their day so I'm honoured to be playing and whether I get 15 or 90 minutes I'll be delighted — it should be a great occasion."
During his illustrious time in England, Goater enjoyed prolific spells at Rotherham United and Bristol City before his career-defining move to Maine Road — Manchester City's previous stadium.
He finished as the club's top scorer for four consecutive seasons becoming a cult hero with the supporters who created a song in his honour, "Feed The Goat And He Will Score".
In the 2001/02 season the Hamilton-born hit-man became the first City player since Francis Lee in 1972 to score more than 30 goals in a season.
"I've been back to Manchester three or four times since I left City and I've always had a great reception from the fans when I've returned — I'm looking forward to it," he added.
All money raised from the match will go towards the PFA's One Goal, One Million campaign to build a new wing at the National University Children's Hospital in Manchester.
As part of its centenary year the PFA are also putting together a list of the top 100 players who have played professional football over the last 100 years.
