Trott makes shaky start to life at West Ham

Good recover: Trott did not let his early mistake trouble him

Nathan Trott, the Bermuda goalkeeper, made his debut in West Ham United’s 1-1 home draw with Reading in the Barclay’s Under-18 Premier League group one play-off on Saturday.

Trott, one of four changes West Ham made to their team from the one that lost 3-0 away to high-flying Manchester City in their previous outing, made a shaky start after spilling a high cross in a crowd of players that Sam Smith, the Reading striker, swept into an empty net to put the visiting side ahead in the 20th minute.

However, Trott, the former BAA and North Village youth player, redeemed himself five-minutes later when he made a fine save to thwart Smith.

West Ham equalised on the hour mark after Reading had an appeal for a penalty fall on deaf ears through a goal from Anthony Scully, the Ireland Under-17 player, who scored at the back post after some excellent play by Joe Powell, the winger.

Scully picked up a niggling injury and was replaced as the home side piled on the pressure in search of a winner that never came as Reading held on.

West Ham’s Under-18s are at home to Liverpool in their next outing.

Trott, the Bermuda under-17 goalkeeper, signed a 2½-year deal at West Ham in January and has hit the ground running at the East London club since then.

“I have settled in quite quickly actually,” he said. “All my team-mates and coaches made it easier for me to settle in quite quickly.

“It’s a Premier League club, so the level here is quite high. It was quite hard to adjust, but I have adjusted to it now.”

Trott has already had the opportunity to train with West Ham’s first team who are riding high in the Barclay’s Premier League.

“It’s a big difference from the Academy level to the first team and lots of experience as well,” he said. “I’m always happy to train with them and it’s a big privilege to train with them as well.

“When I first started it was intimidating because it’s a big step up. But now that I’ve trained with them more than once I’ve settled in well.”

Trott is one of two Bermudian players coming through the ranks at West Ham, the other being highly rated striker Djair Parfitt-Williams who is recovering from a knee injury.
