Mr Organic catering to the health-conscious

It's natural: Mr Organic founders Megan and Preston Ephraim with some of their additive-free treats

A Bermudian couple has turned a lifestyle into a business — and Mr Organic is going from strength to strength.

Preston Ephraim, who runs the firm with wife Megan, branched out into the green foods market through his job as a nutrition and lifestyle counsellor at a medical centre.

Mr Ephraim, who moved back to Bermuda from the US 12 years ago, explained: “When I arrived, the food I was accustomed to wasn’t available, so I began to import my own food.

“Friends and family saw it and made requests and a friend suggested I make it a business.

“I started an online business and now we have created an import company.”

Mr Organic brings in a wide range of wholefoods, with around 1,000 different products available.

The range includes organic, raw, wildcrafted, which is plants that grow naturally and are harvested, and heirloom foods, which can be traced back to their point of origin.

Mr Ephraim added: “A lot of the food I was recommending for my clients was not available either.

“I wanted them to eat very clean because sometimes the problems people have can be fixed by dietary changes.”

Mr Ephraim said that he and Megan also regularly set up pop-up stalls at farmers’ markets and will have a stand at this weekend’s Ag Show.

The couple also do a range of nutritious smoothies and cold press juices which have proved a hit with the health-conscious.

Mr Ephraim said: “It’s been going well and really picking up. We’ve had requests for our cakes in restaurants and we’ve had requests for particular dietary preferences.”

The company imports items like beans, legumes, rice, dried mushrooms, nuts and super foods with a high nutritional density, all produced using organic methods.

Mr Ephraim said: “What’s more important than ever, and I support people with coaching with this, is eat consciously.

“It’s about conscious eating, meaningful eating, as opposed to the habitual unconscious eating.”

He added: “As a coach, I like to say it’s not what you eat, it’s what’s in your food.”

Ms Ephraim said that baked products include cakes, muffins and even chocolate cake, with a red velvet cake to come.

She added that the firm had also been approached by other businesses who want to feature their smoothies, while she has also been asked to run classes for people who want to make healthier food for their families.

And Ms Ephraim said companies had asked her to come to advise staff on better eating.

She added: “A lot of our customers already eat like this and they’re asking us to have a store as well — we will see what that looks like. But at the moment, we’re happy with the pop-ups.”
