Fletcher fails to hit qualifying mark

Still pushing: Olympic hopeful Fletcher

Julian Fletcher was unable to hit the Olympic Games qualifying mark in the 200 metres at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Toronto yesterday.

The 25-year-old, who described the trials at his “big chance” to reach Rio, finished fourteenth overall in the 200 preliminaries in a time of 2min 18.54sec.

Fletcher had been aiming to reach the Olympic A standard in both the 100 (1:00.57) and 200 breaststroke (2:11.04) at the meet.

He also missed out on reaching the standard in the 100, finishing eighteenth in Tuesday’s preliminary heats in a time of 1:03.63.

Fletcher, who swims for the Trojans Swim Club at the University of Southern California, is one of several Bermuda swimmers aiming to qualify for the Olympics.

Also competing in Toronto is Roy-Allan Burch, who will be swimming competitively for the first time since rupturing his patella tendons in both knees in April last year.

Burch, a two-times Olympian, will compete in the 100 freestyle heats today and 50 free heats on Sunday.

Madelyn Moore, Rebecca Heyliger and Lisa Blackburn are also pushing to qualify for the Rio Games.
