Planning permission was granted for the proposal at the Pink Beach Club at South Road, Smiths, after a short delay in the Government planning department.

Pink Beach managing director Michael Williams said building work on the project, which will see 19 condominiums erected and 88 tourist units established, would start by the end of the year.

He said work would take up to 18 months and involve converting 34 existing units into 19 condominiums for sale and constructing new tourist accommodation.

The cottage colony will remain open during the work, with the hotel units being converted during the off-season. In addition, the condo site will be sectioned off from the rest of the property.

Meanwhile, tourist blocks at another South Road resort are to be converted into more residential accommodation.

Planning permission was granted for the Mermaid Beach Club in Warwick to change two tourist units into homes.

Approval was initially rejected last year, but the Development and Applications Board agreed to the plans to create 11 units with landscaping and improvements to the shoreline and site access.

Conditions include the building of artificial Longtail nesting sites and a buffer area of undeveloped land.

At Wellbottom in Southampton Mr. Troy Eversley was granted planning permission for a new warehouse and yard, with a condition that landscaping is part of the scheme.

John Pereira was refused permission for a timber dock at Smiths after concerns over eco-damage and its size.
