Town up for the CFU challenge
Dandy Town, the newly crowned Premier Division champions, look set to make a return to the Caribbean Football Union Club Championships next year.
Club officials at Western Stars Sports Club, Town’s parent club, have already started laying the groundwork for the league champions to compete in the next instalment of the Concacaf Champions League qualifier.
“The club has already taken steps to assure that we will be going to the CFU Club Championships,” Jomar Wilkinson, the Town coach, said.
“Playing in that competition definitely challenges the players. But everybody is really excited and we are looking forward to the challenge.”
The St John’s Road club became eligible for the regional tournament after clinching a fourth league title in seven seasons, and eighth overall, nearly a week ago.
Wilkinson said the tournament offers players a chance at a higher level that some might not otherwise receive.
“It gives our players an opportunity to be challenged in a different way at the international level,” he added. “And it is as close as a lot of them will get to playing in an international setting.”
Wilkinson was also the coach of Town’s team that made their debut in the CFU Club Championships in 2011. On that occasion, Town bowed out at the first hurdle after losing 4-1 on aggregate to the Trinidadian Defence Force, the former Concacaf Champions League champions.
“The team we had before was more experienced, we had a few more older players in the team,” Wilkinson said. “This team is pretty young, but we are a little more experienced having been before.
“We have some new players and the CFU games will definitely give them some more experience and help them grow. We are definitely trying to enhance these players.”
Town were denied the opportunity to compete in the 2013 CFU Club Championships because of a rule change permitting only professional clubs to participate in the competition.
Somerset Trojans, last season’s champions, made their first appearance in the tournament last month, but went out in the preliminary round after heavy 5-0 and 4-1 defeats respectively by Don Bosco, a semi-professional side from Haiti, and La Gauloise, of Guadeloupe.
Trojans, who are locked in a three-team relegation battle to determine who joins Hamilton Parish in the second tier, were dethroned last weekend after losing 2-0 away to Town.
