Committee to discuss changing season dates

Bad weather led to a four-week break during this season

The inclement weather that has wreaked havoc on the harness racing season will be on the agenda during Driving Horse and Pony Club’s committee meeting next week.

Racing resumed at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre last week after a four-week break because of strong gales and rain.

In all, six race days have been cancelled because of the poor weather, prompting calls from drivers to hold the season earlier in the year to avoid the winter months.

“Our next committee meeting is on Tuesday when we will discuss this,” Bettina Truran, the DHPC spokesperson, said.

“The timing of the race schedule this year is very comparable to the majority of the race seasons that I remember over the last 20 plus years.

“Only in the couple of years before this committee was voted in was the season adjusted to begin at the beginning of September.

“Unfortunately Mother Nature has not been kind to harness racing the last couple of years.”

Meanwhile, harness racing is scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Vesey Street racetrack where the final six spots for the season-ending Champion of Champions will be up for grabs.

All six of the racing ponies in the Free for All have qualified for the Champion of Champions, and it now remains to be seen which ponies will join them to complete the field of 12.

Missing from action this weekend is Full Throttle Racing’s mare IC’s Shakedown, which shares the fastest time for the season at 1:03/3 with Arnold Manders’ gelding Cherokee’s Ironman.

IC’s Shakedown, which also shares the track record for a mare with Inwood Stables’ Abby’s Dream, has been sidelined through a foot injury.

“She came up a little sore after the last race so we worked on her this week and had the vet look at her,” Colin Mello, the pony’s trainer, said.

“She is getting better and should be ready in a couple of weeks.”
