Nobody's judging your booty; go ahead and shake it!

That's Geisha Chin's advice. And she's holding twerkouts at The Athletic Club to prove it.

Her fitness classes will be full of the booty-popping moves popularised by Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Music Awards.

“When I tell people I'm teaching a twerking class, often the first thing they say is, 'But I don't have a big booty',” said the 24-year-old. “You don't need a big booty to twerk. Nobody is watching your butt in my class.

“The next thing they say is, 'I'm not 19 or 20 anymore!' We had a pilot class last Saturday and, while we did have a few 18- or 19-year-olds, most people were over 35; I had one student who was almost 50.

“They were just looking for something fun that would be a workout but make them feel sexy at the same time.”

The real worry with this class should be whether you can handle an hour of squats and booty-shaking.

“It is an intense workout,” Ms Chin said. “You don't realise how much you're working your legs because you are having fun at the same time.

“It works your hamstrings, abs and glutes and even helps develop muscles in the lower back, an area a lot of fitness enthusiasts forget. Almost anyone can do it, but even my legs hurt afterward and I do this all the time.”

She has playfully dubbed some of her twerkout moves the Lazy Stripper, the Wobble and the In and Out, but the class is a clean one.

“It can be hard finding music that is clean,” she said. “I make sure that the twerkout is sexy, but classy. We won't be dropping the splits and doing all sorts of crazy things.”

Ms Chin was born in Jamaica but moved to Toronto at age 10. She studied ballet and hip-hop and, at 19, became the youngest contestant on So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

“I actually tried to get on to the show twice,” she said.

She went through 90 hours of gruelling auditions before she made it on to television as one of the final 20 dancers.

“There was one part of the audition where we had to dance all day and all night,” she said. “They were trying to break us. There was one moment where I thought I couldn't do it anymore. I called my mother in tears, but I pulled myself together and went on with it.”

She made it to the top 12 before she was eliminated in the 2011 season of the show.

“Of course you are devastated,” she said. “You have to do all these exit interviews where you are crying your eyes out. They ask you, 'Do you feel sad about being eliminated?' Of course you feel sad!”

But the show opened many doors for her. She was able to dance with Canadian choreographers Mia Michaels and Sean Cheesman and singer Victoria Duffield.

“It also allowed me to teach,” she said. “I was teaching Zumba when a friend in Toronto started teaching what she called 'grinding classes'. It was all about using your waist, but it was a dance class.

“I thought it was an awesome workout. I suggested we teach a fitness class with twerking. I was always YouTubing twerking videos and practising in my basement. The class was quite popular in Toronto.”

She's had a varied reaction to the class.

“Some people say, 'That is awesome. I need to come!' Other people say, 'Twerking? You do an entire class on just how to shake your bum?' I say, 'Yes, come and try it'.

“I don't know of any other class offered like this in Bermuda before. We had a crazy turnout last Saturday.”

Ms Chin also teaches Zumba, Piyo, barre and other fitness classes.

Her twerkout shakes off at 12.30pm and will continue every Saturday for four weeks. Admission is $75. No previous dance experience is required. Telephone 295-6140 to reserve a spot.

Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke popularised twerking but it has been around for a while.

It's thought to be linked to bounce, a 1990s hip-hop dance style but may have its roots in traditional West Africa dance.

Most important is that it's done to the right music.

“The beat has to be hard so you can hit the accents with your bum,” said dancer and fitness teacher Geisha Chin.

The tunes aren't usually G-rated; Juicy J is one of the more popular artists.

Below, Ms Chin's favourite songs to twerkout with:

1. Red Nose by Sage The Gemini

2. Up Down (Do This All Day) by T-Pain

3. Pop That by French Montana

4.Bandz A Make Her Dance by Juicy J

5. One Drop by QQ Ft Venomus
