Wells rules out transfer move

Going nowhere: in-form striker Wells has been linked with a move to several of Huddersfield’s Championship rivals

Nahki Wells has insisted he will not be leaving Huddersfield Town during this month’s transfer window.

The 25-year-old has reportedly attracted the attention of Huddersfield’s Sky Bet Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers.

However, Wells told The Royal Gazette yesterday he was committed to staying at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“I don’t really want to speak about [transfer] speculation because that’s typical when you’re doing well,” said Wells, who signed a 4½-year deal at Huddersfield at the beginning of 2014.

“I’m in good form right now and I know for a fact that I will be at Huddersfield come the end of the season.”

Wells struck his tenth goal of the season in Huddersfield’s 5-0 thrashing of Championship strugglers Charlton Athletic at home on Tuesday.

It was Wells’s fifth goal in as many games, with the Bermuda captain now confident of shattering the 20-goal barrier before the end of the season.

“What’s more important to me is how high we can finish and how many goals I can score,” said Wells, who scored eight goals in consecutive matches for Bradford City in 2013.

“I’m still pushing for 20-plus goals and I’m on course to do that.

“Our emphasis is on finishing in the top half of the table. If we can keep up our form then promotion could be a late shout.

“We’re taking it game by game and just trying to play the way the head coach [David Wagner] wants us to.

“I’m starting to put a run together and score on a consistent basis, which is something I’ve been waiting for. I know if we’re playing well and winning games I will be scoring goals.”

Wells attributes his deadly form to the backing he has received from head coach Wagner, who replaced Chris Powell at the helm last November.

“I think the key is we’re playing great football and I fit well into our system,” Wells said. “I have brought into what the manager wants me to do and I’m really enjoying football again.

“I don’t think I was being played to my strengths in the past.

“But now I think the manager knows my strengths and is willing to work hard to get the best out of me. I’m repaying him with good performances and goals.”

Huddersfield’s displays since Wagner’s appointment have been much improved, with the West Yorkshire side unbeaten in five matches including three victories.

“I think our team’s progress has been phenomenal and genuinely feel we’re the team to beat at the moment,” Wells said.

“I think since the new gaffer has come in we have dominated every fixture we have played apart from 45 minutes away to Brentford.

“I’m delighted with the way the manager has got us playing. We are all playing with our tails up and are confident.

“We’ve been dominating games besides the one off-match with Brentford when we had a poor start.”

Huddersfield, who are sixteenth in table, are at home to Fulham on Saturday.
