Another unbeaten First Division leader came crashing down to earth yesterday, when St David’s were thrashed 6-0 by neighbours St George’s in the rain at Wellington Oval.

Two weeks ago Young Men’s Social Club were thrashed 6-1 by Somerset Eagles, and yesterday St David’s felt the full force of St George’s as they suffered their first defeat of the season, three days before the two teams meet again in the preliminary round of the Friendship Trophy.

St George’s trailed the leaders by seven points going into the weekend, knowing that another defeat would leave them ten points off the pace.

However, they responded in spectacular fashion, taking the lead in the twelfth minute through defender Philip Anderson before Jarazinho Bassett made it 2-0 after 25 minutes.

Things got better for the home team with two more goals coming before the break, Kyle Denbrook making it 3-0 in the 36th minute before Marcus Proctor converted an own goal.

Macai Simmons completed the rout of the leaders with two strikes of his own in the 49th and 58th minutes, leaving St George’s in fifth place, but more importantly, only four points out of the top spot in what is becoming an exciting promotion race. To complete the misery for St David’s, Keijon Butterfield was shown a straight red card in the 71st minute for foul and abusive language.

Second placed Flanagan’s Onions went the same way as St David’s as they missed the chance to take over top spot. Onions were beaten 4-1 by Somerset Eagles as Cordell Henry scored a brace at White Hill Field.

Eagles controlled proceedings from start to finish and with better finishing could have won by a much wider margin against an Onions side that defended poorly and gifted their opponents two goals.

The hosts took only eleven minutes to break the deadlock. Rushaun Seaman scored from inside of the area after Onions failed to clear a cross.

Nathan Rego then fired home from the top of the 18-yard box to give Eagles a 2-0 cushion at the half.

Eagles surged further ahead in the 63rd minute when Henry dribbled several yards, rounded the advancing goalkeeper and slotted in after Onions gave the ball away deep in their own half.

Onions pulled one back in the 65th minute, Phil Matthews scoring from a corner kick with a glancing header at the near post.

However, Rego restored Eagle’s three goal cushion in the 70th minute when he slotted home his second after Onions gave the ball away deep in their own territory for the second time in the match.

Clay Darrell grabbed a hat trick as Young Men’s Social Club came from behind to thrash Wolves 5-1 at PHC Field to stay in the hunt for promotion.

The son of former national cricket team captain Clay Smith netted in the 68th, 80th and 87th minutes to spearhead the hosts fightback after falling behind just before the half.

Wolves took the lead through Raymond Butterfield’s 34th minute strike.

However, the visitors’ joy was short-lived as Robert Rawlins grabbed an equaliser for the home side a minute later to send the teams into the dressing room at the interval deadlocked at 1-1.

Darrell gave Social Club the lead for good when he converted the first of his impressive treble before Nique Armstrong extended the hosts’ lead two minutes later.

Darrell then struck twice inside of seven minutes to secure the win heap more misery on a Wolves side who were simply out of their depth on the day. Social Club are fourth in the standings, just three points behind leaders St David’s.

The remaining First Division match between BAA and Ireland Rangers at Goose Gosling Field was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
