Young athletes invited to join Jamaica college

Track and field coach Brandon Hayden of Munroe College in Jamaica has been keeping a close watch on some of Bermuda's most promising athletes during their recent involvement in international meets.

Hayden attended this year's Carifta Games in St. Kitts and was impressed by good showings from several of Bermuda's up and coming young stars, prompting him to make a few calls to the Island about the availability of the athletes joining his ranks.

Included in the list of athletes interesting Hayden were Matthew Spring, Harold (Tre) Houston, Zaccheus Rawlins, Ryan Furbert, Kyle Virgil and Darrion Simmons.

However, with Spring already in school and Houston having been accepted to a school in September, the invitation has shrunk to the remaining individuals.

Donna Watson, who was assistant coach of the Bermuda Carifta Games team, said that although a few of the athletes won't be able to accept the invitation for one reason or another, those that do could gain vast knowledge and experience from the offer.

"This is a great opportunity in track and field and will open the door for several of our up and coming boys," said Watson. "It also will give them an incentive for something to shoot for even before college and university.

"The coach has been following their track results right up to the East Coast Invitational this past weekend and has been very excited with what he was seeing.

"Due to the fact that Matthew was already in a school and Tre had already been accepted in school for September we pursued this, looking at Zaccheus, Ryan, Kyle and Darrion.

"Zach decided that he would stay in Bermuda and complete his studies at Mount Saint Agnes. Ryan, Kyle and Darrion set an exam a few weeks ago and the results along with their track performances were sent to their principal.

"The coach met with their principal this week and confirmed that based on the exam results, age of the athletes, track performances, they would accept three of the athletes – Ryan, Kyle and Darrion.

"The parents have been notified and everyone is very excited.

"Munroe have placed in the top three in the Penn Relays each year they have participated and is one of the top schools in Jamaica not only from an educational standpoint, but a track standpoint as well.

"Their students have gone on to get scholarships in great universities and some of their athletes have gone on to become top class runners."
