Kaelyn Castle is a singing sensation in the making. At 16, she possesses the level of confidence necessary in the music industry. She recently released her first solo album, ‘Love, Drama and Dreams’.On it are 12 songs she wrote about high school life, relationships and her hopes for the future. The budding star is also preparing to release music videos for two songs, ‘Lose a Tear’ and ‘Do You Like How I’m Dancing?’, which are already out on YouTube and played on Caribbean music station Tempo. She said she has wanted to become a star ever since she was a small child. Many young children shy away from the limelight Kaelyn wasn’t afraid to take centre stage even when in nursery school. She is said to have learned all the children’s singing parts in Christmas plays staged, and even stepped in to perform when others were too afraid to.“That is where my love for music all started,” she told The Royal Gazette.Three years later, while singing at her great grandmother’s funeral service, other family members began to take notice of her vocal abilities.“It was when I was five that I realised I enjoyed doing it and people around me encouraged me to continue [with it],” she said.At 11 she became the youngest performer to open at the Bermuda Music Festival. The Mount Saint Agnes student has been honing her talent ever since. She said she was proud of her album, co-produced by Canadian Orville Malcolm and Families Minister Glenn Blakeney.“I want to be known internationally. I just want to pursue music and see how far I can actually get this to go,” she said.“Basically I feel I can get to a high level, but I just need more support. So far the support I do have is very strong, but I need to also get more exposure and experience.”Kaelyn describes her music as “urban crossover” and said she is constantly exploring to find which direction she wants to take her career. For now, her songs are a mix of pop, jazz and R&B, “with a touch of hip hop” — thanks to help from young rapper Jelani Simmons, featured on two of the tracks. She believes her style of music should be easy for her peers to relate to.“I am just an average teenager going through normal things”.The teenager believes people are still “quite surprised and amazed” to learn she penned her own lyrics she also plays the piano and used to play the violin. She is backed on her songs by veteran performer Gwen Blakeney, president of Bermuda Soul Record Company.Mrs Blakeney said she is pleased with the teen’s development.“To be honest when she first came into the recording studio she was very shy and just sat in the recording booth. And when we tried to get her to sing she wouldn’t go to the mic, but sat in a chair.“We could still hear her singing and it picked up her beautiful voice, but since then she has gained a lot of confidence and is now mastering the studio.”Mrs Blakeney said the label was pushing to bring young, local talent to the forefront. Their next effort is R&B artist Corvin Melody.“[The young artists] are the ones we feel that have a future in the business. Recording labels normally tend to see 25 or 30 as cutting it on the old side.“Kaelyn is only 16 and wrote all of her material so she is really super talented. Her CD, in my opinion, could stand up with just about the best of the CDs that are put out there.“The quality of the music and the musicianship everything from the packaging of the album [on down] I think came out very well and we are very proud of it.”‘Love, Drama and Dreams’ is available at the Music Box and Soundstage in Hamilton, for $20. Kaelyn’s songs are also available on iTunes and via bermudasoul.com.
